The Union of Nicaraguan Women and Men Political Prisoners (UPPN) on Friday, February 6, 2026, called for the restoration of freedoms and all civil and political rights for political prisoners in Nicaragua, as well as for those subjected to any form of extended illegal detention.
In a statement, the UPPN also demanded the immediate cessation of all forms of physical, psychological and moral torture; as well as cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment of the victims and their families, by the government presided over by husband and wife, Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo.
It also called for an “urgent intensification” of impartial international monitoring and investigation of human rights violations in Nicaragua, in line with the findings of the UN-established Group of Experts on Human Rights in Nicaragua (GHREN) and the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), with a view to establishing individual criminal responsibility and sanctions.
It also urged the international community, as recommended by the GHREN, to hold Nicaragua accountable before the International Court of Justice for violations of the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, and to adopt measures to protect the victims of repression.
In the opinion of this organization, “to dismantle the structure that sustains the system of repression that subjects the Nicaraguan people to a state of control and terror at the hands of the regime, will only be possible through the legitimate search for an integral structural justice that starts from the dignity of the victims”.
“As survivors of the physical, psychological and moral damage and torture perpetrated by the terrorist narco-regime of the FSLN (Sandinista National Liberation Front) we declare that the supremacy of the dignity of the victims is unshakable and cannot be degraded in acts of humiliation, submission or public obeisance that seek to deny us the legitimate right to truth, justice, full reparation and guarantees of repetition,” he insisted.
The UPPN also criticized that the recent releases without full freedom could be taken as “a gesture of good will on the part of the regime”.
He also reaffirmed “that political prisoners are not bargaining chips, instruments of political negotiation or tools for social control”.
“They are full subjects of rights, being a collective responsibility to fight and demand their total liberation,” he noted.
