Nicaragua has officially requested observer status in the post-Soviet Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), presidential advisor for Investments, Trade and International Cooperation Laureano Ortega Murillo announced on June 26, 2025.
Ortega Murillo, who is the son of Nicaragua’s ruling couple, shared the news during his remarks at the plenary session of the EAEU economic forum held in Minsk, the capital of Belarus, noting that this is a goal of great importance for Managua.
He stated that Nicaragua is ready to comply with all necessary procedures to obtain this status, previously granted to Cuba.
The son of the dictators oversees the registration and supervision of foreign investment in Nicaragua under the Foreign Investment Law passed in February 2025. Ortega Murillo also serves as the Nicaraguan government’s special representative for signing agreements with Belarus, China, Iran, and Russia.
Before Ortega Murillo spoke, Cuban leader Miguel Díaz-Canel addressed the event, calling for stronger ties between the post-Soviet bloc and the island.
He proposed turning Cuba into a logistics and investment hub to promote Eurasian goods in Latin America.
The members of the Eurasian Economic Union (Russia, Belarus, Armenia, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan) and the grouping’s observer countries (Moldova, Uzbekistan, Cuba and Iran) account for one-fifth of the world’s population.
