At the same time, it accused electoral magistrate Lumberto Campbell Hooker of having participated \u201cdirectly\u201d in the denial of medical care to political prisoner Brooklyn Rivera, <a href=\"https:\/\/confidencial.digital\/en\/english\/u-s-holds-ortega-and-murillo-responsible-for-the-death-of-indigenous-leader-brooklyn-rivera\/\">who died while in state custody.<\/a> <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio described those sanctioned as \u201caccomplices\u201d in the consolidation of the dictatorship in Nicaragua, which international organizations have accused of serious human rights violations and the dismantling of democratic institutions in the country.<br\/><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe United States stands with the Nicaraguan people who, like Rivera, aspire to a free Nicaragua,\u201d Rubio emphasized in a <a href=\"https:\/\/ni.usembassy.gov\/continuing-to-promote-accountability-for-the-murillo-ortega-dictatorship\/\">statement<\/a> issued on June 8, 2026, announcing the new measures by the Donald Trump administration.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Brooklyn Rivera, a 73-year-old Miskito Indigenous leader, died on May 30, 2026, at 8:30 p.m., after more than 970 days of unlawful imprisonment. The dictatorship confirmed his death one day later, <a href=\"https:\/\/confidencial.digital\/en\/nation\/even-in-death-brooklyn-rivera-remained-under-state-control-murillo-ordered-him-buried-in-managua\/\">kept his body under police custody,<\/a> and ordered his burial in Managua. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With these new visa restrictions, the United States says it has now sanctioned more than 2,350 \u201cNicaraguan officials and their family members for their complicity\u201d with the dictatorship. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The decision was adopted under Presidential Proclamation 10309, a measure that \u201csuspends entry into the United States, both for immigrants and nonimmigrants, of members of the Government of Nicaragua and other individuals who formulate, implement, or benefit from policies or actions that undermine democratic institutions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"h-lumberto-campbell-acusado-directo\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lumberto Campbell Directly Accused<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The top U.S. diplomat directly accused Campbell Hooker\u2014who had previously been sanctioned by Washington\u2014of being directly involved in the \u201cdenial of medical care to Brooklyn Rivera and preventing his family from burying him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe United States,\u201d he warned, \u201cwill not ignore the Murillo-Ortega dictatorship\u2019s responsibility for the horrific death of political prisoner Brooklyn Rivera.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Campbell Hooker appeared in <a href=\"https:\/\/confidencial.digital\/en\/nation\/political-prisoner-brooklyn-rivera-emaciated-and-confined-to-a-hospital-bed\/\">photographs released by the regime on May 27, 2026,<\/a> when authorities reported the Indigenous leader\u2019s \u201cserious\u201d health condition.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The images show the Caribbean Coast magistrate standing beside Brooklyn Rivera as he lay bedridden in a hospital. Days later, Campbell also took part in the wake organized by the regime in Managua. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The funeral ceremonies, held at the Sierras de Paz cemetery, were tightly controlled by the Ortega regime after it prevented Rivera\u2019s family from transporting his body to the North Caribbean Coast for burial, in accordance with the Miskito leader\u2019s explicitly stated wishes.<br\/> <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even after his death, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/confidencial.digital\/nacion\/tininiska-rivera-a-mi-padre-lo-asesinaron-durante-tres-anos\/\">my father remains kidnapped,\u201d Tininiska Rivera said in an interview with CONFIDENCIAL and<em> Esta Semana<\/em>. \u201c<\/a>They did not even grant us that right\u2014the right to say goodbye to him,\u201d she said.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since May 31, at least six of Rivera\u2019s relatives have remained missing after traveling from Bilwi to Managua to claim the <a href=\"https:\/\/confidencial.digital\/en\/english\/nicaraguas-ortega-murillo-regime-conceals-death-of-political-prisoner-brooklyn-rivera-for-15-hours\/\">Indigenous leader\u2019s<\/a> body.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since September 2023, the regime had ignored repeated requests from Rivera\u2019s family and the international community for proof that he was alive.
