With the delivery of a mining concession covering the municipalities of Totogalpa, Yalag\u00fcina and Palacag\u00fcina, in the department of Madriz, on February 16, 2025, the regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo surpassed the one million hectares given in concession to Chinese companies<\/a>, with one and two years of operation in the country, according to official data analyzed by CONFIDENCIAL<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

This is exactly 1,004,287.38 hectares, equivalent to some 10,042.87 square kilometers (km2). The sum doubles the total area of some departments of Nicaragua, such as, for example, Managua, which has an area of 3465 km2, or Chinandega, which measures about 4822 km2. It also quadruples the area of Estel\u00ed with 2230 km2, or Rivas with 2162 km2. <\/p>\n\n

The one million hectares, given for mining, are distributed in 72 concessions given to 16 Chinese companies, some of which accumulate up to 17 concessions and others, recently created, have received the transfer of one or two concessions originally given to another Chinese company.<\/p>\n\n

The last mining concession granted to a Chinese company was registered on February 16, 2026<\/a>, when Brother Metal S.A. was granted a 2605.27 hectare lot called Yalag\u00fcina II, located in the municipalities of Totogalpa, Yalag\u00fcina and Palacag\u00fcina.<\/p>\n\n

Brother Metal S.A. accumulates, until mid-February 2026, some 14 mining concessions in Nicaragua, comprising 208,959.35 hectares of land in the departments of Madriz, Nueva Segovia, Chinandega and the Autonomous Region of the Northern Caribbean Coast. It is the second Chinese company with the most concessions in the country. <\/p>\n\n

Two of the concessions held by Brother Metal S.A. were transferred to it in November 2025 by the company El Porvenir Murra S.A.<\/p>\n\n

Transfer of concessions<\/h2>\n\n

Zhong Fu Development S.A. is another Chinese mining company benefited by the Ortega regime. This company owns nine concessions covering 150,633 hectares in the departments of Chinandega, R\u00edo San Juan and the Autonomous Region of the Northern Caribbean Coast. <\/p>\n\n

As of September 2025, Zhong Fu Development S.A. accumulated 13 mining concessions, but transferred four concessions to Waslala Mine S.A., <\/strong>Y.M. Mining Company, S.A., Tutuwaka Mining Company, S.A. and Southern Mining, S.A. <\/p>\n\n

These four concessions total 113,958 hectares in the Northern and Southern Caribbean.<\/p>\n\n

Likewise, Nicaragua Xinxin Linze Miner\u00eda Group S.A. has been favored with the delivery of mining concessions. It has 12 concessions comprising 144,884.8 hectares, located in Jinotega, Estel\u00ed, Le\u00f3n, R\u00edo San Juan, Chontales, and the autonomous regions of the North Caribbean Coast and South Caribbean. It is the third Chinese company with the most concessions in the country. <\/p>\n\n

Until July 2025, Nicaragua Xinxin Linze Miner\u00eda Group S.A. owned 14 concessions, but transferred two of them to Linze Excelente Mineria, S.A. These concessions total 10,592 hectares and are located in the departments of Chontales and Nueva Segovia.<\/p>\n\n

The company with the most concessions<\/h2>\n\n

The Chinese company with the most mining concessions in Nicaragua is Thomas Metal S.A. Between 2023 and 2026, it received 17 concessions covering 228,272.98 hectares of land in the departments of Chinandega, R\u00edo San Juan, Nueva Segovia, Matagalpa, and the North and South Caribbean.<\/p>\n\n

Among the concessions granted to Thomas Metal S.A. is one that was transferred to it in January 2026 by Compa\u00f1\u00eda Minera Internacional, S.A. (Comintsa)<\/a>, sanctioned in 2024 by the U.S. Treasury Department.<\/p>\n\n

The lot transferred by Comintsa to Thomas Metal S.A., called La Reina II, comprises 4131.79 hectares in the municipalities of Matagalpa and San Ram\u00f3n, in the department of Matagalpa. The transfer was authorized by the Vice Minister of Energy and Mines, Santiago Bermudez. <\/p>\n\n

In 2024 Washington sanctioned Comintsa and Capital Mining Investment Nicaragua<\/a>, two mining companies that trade in gold and, as “government-affiliated”, “generate revenue for the Ortega-Murillo regime”, according to the Treasury Department.<\/p>\n\n

Newspaper reports indicate that Comintsa is directed by the Minister of Energy and Mines, Salvador Mansell Castrillo, but is legally represented by Nelson Francisco Sobalvarro, according to the Official Gazette La Gaceta.<\/p>\n\n

Other Chinese mining companies operating in Nicaragua are: Global Group, with three concessions totaling 48,318.65 hectares, Three Gold Coins Company, S.A., with three concessions totaling 31,165.62 hectares, Little Stone Mine, S.A. with two concessions totaling 21,661.96 hectares and New Era Mining Development Company with two concessions totaling 21,661.9 hectares.<\/p>\n\n

Chinese companies receive preferential treatment<\/h2>\n\n

Amaru Ruiz, president of the confiscated Fundaci\u00f3n del R\u00edo, explains that there is a “particular interest” of the Ortega-Murillo regime in promoting the “rapid expansion” of Chinese mining companies in Nicaragua. These companies are more easily installed and receive accompaniment from the regime, something that did not happen with the old mining actors in the country<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n

The regime “has provided them with a number of elements, such as environmental impact studies that Chinese companies no longer carry out, concessions within protected areas, the change in the environmental evaluation system that allows them not to carry out consultations in non-indigenous territories and, obviously, the ease with which they are granting these concessions,” emphasizes Ruiz.<\/p>\n\n

The environmentalist indicates that “the regime has modified the rules of the game to allow Chinese mining and Chinese mining companies to take control of industrial mining<\/a> in the country”. Meanwhile, he adds, “the old capitals are reporting a series of pressures, which include not continuing with some lots they had already acquired”. <\/p>\n\n

In addition, Ruiz warns, many of the lots ceded to the Chinese mining companies are located in mining reserve areas, these areas were created by the sanctioned Nicaraguan Mining Company (Eniminas) and then passed to the General Directorate of Mines. In order to hand over each of these lots, a public-private contract must be established, which the regime keeps hidden. <\/p>\n\n

Recently, the regime transferred the General Directorate of Mines (DGM)<\/a> -a key entity in the administration of the Nicaraguan mining sector and sanctioned by the United States since October 2022- to the “super” Attorney General’s Office (PGJ). The environmentalist sees this as an attempt to hide information related to Chinese mining companies, an attempt to evade US sanctions and more pressure on the old mining actors in Nicaragua. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
