The government has accumulated at least nine diplomatic crises in less than five years, deepening the country\u2019s isolation.<\/p>\n\n<p>Critical comments, participation in meetings, or even absence from a <em>state\u2013party event<\/em> have been the \u201cjustifications\u201d used by Ortega and Murillo to expel ambassadors, suspend relations, or <a href=\"https:\/\/confidencial.digital\/politica\/las-rupturas-diplomaticas-de-daniel-ortega\/\">sever diplomatic ties<\/a> with other countries, progressively isolating Nicaragua from the international community.<\/p>\n\n<p>This strategy of confrontation, which has resulted in the expulsion of several ambassadors, has intensified over the last four years. During that period, the Nicaraguan regime has clashed directly with:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Vatican City<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>European Union<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Netherlands<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Colombia<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Spain<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>United States<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Brazil<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ecuador<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Taiwan<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-el-choque-diplomatico-con-espana\">The diplomatic clash with Spain<\/h2>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.confidencial.digital\/politica\/espana-niega-injerencias-en-nicaragua-y-pide-a-ortega-no-utilizar-excusas\/\">Diplomatic tensions between Nicaragua and Spain <\/a>began in June 2021, following the illegal detention of opposition leaders in the context of the November elections that year, in which Ortega secured reelection without political competition. Spain responded on several occasions with strong protests.<\/p>\n\n<p>In August 2021, Spain\u2019s Ministry of Foreign Affairs recalled its then-ambassador in Managua, <a href=\"https:\/\/confidencial.digital\/politica\/espana-llama-a-consultas-a-su-embajadora-en-nicaragua\/\">Mar\u00eda del Mar Fern\u00e1ndez-Palacios<\/a>, for consultations, after a note from the Nicaraguan government accused Spain of \u201cinterference in internal affairs\u201d and of covering up \u201chate crimes and crimes against humanity\u201d during Catalonia\u2019s independence bid.<\/p>\n\n<p>When Ambassador Fern\u00e1ndez-Palacios attempted to return to Nicaragua in March 2022, the Ortega regime did not allow her to enter. This prompted the Spanish government to demand an explanation from Nicaragua\u2019s then-ambassador, <a href=\"https:\/\/confidencial.digital\/politica\/ortega-eleva-la-tension-diplomatica-y-retira-su-embajador-en-espana\/\">Carlos Antonio Midence<\/a>. Instead, the regime chose to withdraw its ambassador from Madrid, alleging supposed \u201cinterference, pressure, and threats\u201d against the Nicaraguan diplomat.  <\/p>\n\n<p>Spain later appointed a new ambassador,<a href=\"https:\/\/confidencial.digital\/politica\/espana-nombra-una-nueva-embajadora-en-nicaragua\/\"> Pilar Terr\u00e9n Lalana<\/a>, who presented her credentials in Managua in February 2023. Meanwhile, on the Nicaraguan side, <a href=\"https:\/\/confidencial.digital\/politica\/maurizio-gelli-nuevo-embajador-de-ortega-en-espana-presenta-sus-credenciales-ante-felipe-vi\/\">Maurizio Alberto Gelli<\/a> was appointed ambassador in Madrid in May of that year, suggesting an apparent normalization of bilateral relations. <\/p>\n\n<p>However, the dictatorship broke that apparent \u201cnormality\u201d on January 25, 2026, by expelling Ambassador Farr\u00e9 Salv\u00e1 and his deputy, Minister-Counselor Miguel Mahiques N\u00fa\u00f1ez. Both diplomats were expelled one day after meeting in Managua with a group of eight aid workers representing various development projects, who were <a href=\"https:\/\/confidencial.digital\/en\/policy\/dictatorship-expels-eight-spanish-aid-workers-along-with-spains-ambassador\/\">also expelled from the country.<\/a> <\/p>\n\n<p>The Spanish government ordered the expulsion of Nicaragua\u2019s ambassador in Madrid in \u201cstrict reciprocity\u201d for the \u201cunjust expulsion\u201d of its ambassador in Managua and Spain\u2019s deputy head of mission in Nicaragua.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/confidencial.digital\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Valdrack-Jaentschke-y-Sergio-Farre-Salva.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-182447\" srcset=\"https:\/\/confidencial.digital\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Valdrack-Jaentschke-y-Sergio-Farre-Salva.jpeg 1000w, https:\/\/confidencial.digital\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Valdrack-Jaentschke-y-Sergio-Farre-Salva-300x180.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/confidencial.digital\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Valdrack-Jaentschke-y-Sergio-Farre-Salva-768x461.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/confidencial.digital\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Valdrack-Jaentschke-y-Sergio-Farre-Salva-480x288.jpeg 480w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Former Spanish ambassador to Nicaragua Sergio Farr\u00e9 Salv\u00e1 (right) greets Nicaragua\u2019s \u201cco\u2013foreign minister,\u201d Valdrack Ludwing Jaentschke, in Managua, January 2, 2026. | Photo: Taken from El 19 Digital <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-expulsion-de-embajadores-de-union-europea-y-brasil\">Expulsion of European Union and Brazilian ambassadors<\/h2>\n\n<p>In September 2022, the regime expelled the European Union (EU) ambassador to Nicaragua, <a href=\"https:\/\/confidencial.digital\/principal\/embajadora-de-la-union-europea-expulsada-de-facto-saldra-de-nicaragua-el-sabado\/\">Bettina Muscheidt<\/a>. In response, the bloc expelled Nicaragua\u2019s representative to the EU, <a href=\"https:\/\/confidencial.digital\/principal\/ue-declara-non-grata-a-embajadora-del-regimen-de-ortega\/\">Zoila M\u00fcller.<\/a> <\/p>\n\n<p>In April 2023, the EU appointed a new ambassador to Nicaragua, <a href=\"https:\/\/confidencial.digital\/politica\/ortega-y-murillo-retiran-placet-al-nuevo-embajador-de-la-union-europea-en-nicaragua\/\">Fernando Ponz Cant\u00f3<\/a>, but the regime withdrew the agr\u00e9ment it had previously granted him. Eight months after the mutual expulsion of ambassadors, the regime eventually restored agr\u00e9ment to Ponz Cant\u00f3 and appointed C\u00e9sar <a href=\"https:\/\/confidencial.digital\/politica\/ortega-nombra-a-nuevo-embajador-en-la-ue-y-otorga-placet-a-diplomatico-europeo\/\">Augusto Casta\u00f1eda Lacayo<\/a> as its new ambassador to the EU. <\/p>\n\n<p>The lull in the regime\u2019s diplomatic relations lasted less than a year. In August 2024, the regime unexpectedly expelled Brazil\u2019s ambassador to Nicaragua, <a href=\"https:\/\/confidencial.digital\/politica\/brasil-expulsa-a-embajadora-de-nicaragua-en-reciprocidad-a-la-decision-de-ortega\/\">Breno de Souza Brasil D\u00edas da Costa<\/a>, for failing to attend the celebration marking the 45th anniversary of the Sandinista Revolution. In response, the Brazilian government expelled Nicaragua\u2019s ambassador, Fulvia Castro Matus.  <\/p>\n\n<p>Despite the breakdown in high-level representation, consular services have remained in place, preventing a complete formal rupture. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-retiro-de-credenciales-a-colombia-ee-uu-y-el-vaticano\">Withdrawal of credentials from Colombia, the United States, and the Vatican<br\/><\/h2>\n\n<p>Other diplomatic missions that have clashed with the Nicaraguan dictatorship include Colombia, the United States, and the Holy See, in 2022.<\/p>\n\n<p>In February 2022, the regime <a href=\"https:\/\/confidencial.digital\/politica\/regimen-le-retira-las-credenciales-al-embajador-de-colombia-en-nicaragua\/\">withdrew the credentials of Colombia\u2019s ambassador to Nicaragua,<\/a> Alfredo Rangel Su\u00e1rez, hours after the Colombian government ordered its diplomat to return home following Nicaraguan President<a href=\"https:\/\/www.confidencial.digital\/politica\/colombia-llama-a-su-embajador-en-nicaragua-ante-ofensas-de-ortega\/\"> Daniel Ortega\u2019s accusation that the administration of Iv\u00e1n Duque was a \u201cnarco-state.\u201d <\/a>Months later, diplomatic relations were normalized with the change of government in Colombia. <\/p>\n\n<p>The dictatorship also denied, in August 2022, the agr\u00e9ment it had granted to the U.S. ambassador to Managua, <a href=\"https:\/\/confidencial.digital\/politica\/ortega-admite-que-rechazo-encuentro-con-delegado-de-ee-uu-que-vino-a-nicaragua\/\">Hugo Rodr\u00edguez<\/a>, who never even set foot in Nicaraguan territory. Since then, the embassy has been led by charg\u00e9s d\u2019affaires: <a href=\"https:\/\/confidencial.digital\/politica\/embajada-de-estados-unidos-anuncia-la-llegada-de-su-encargado-de-negocios\/\">Kevin O\u2019Reilly<\/a> in 2023 and Elias Baumann in 2026. <\/p>\n\n<p>At the beginning of March 2022, the dictatorship expelled the apostolic nuncio, <a href=\"https:\/\/confidencial.digital\/principal\/nuncio-apostolico-abandona-nicaragua-bajo-la-presion-del-regimen\/\">Monsignor Waldemar Stanislaw Sommertag, <\/a>from Nicaragua. This fact increased the hostility, persecution and harassment against the Catholic Church in the country. In April 2024, the dictatorship confirmed the <a href=\"https:\/\/confidencial.digital\/politica\/ortega-rompe-relaciones-diplomaticas-con-ecuador-en-respaldo-a-mexico\/\">rupture of diplomatic relations<\/a> with Ecuador, after the Ecuadorian Police broke into the Mexican Embassy in Quito on April 5, 2024, to capture the political asylum seeker and former vice president of that country, Jorge Glas. <\/p>\n\n<p>The rupture with Ecuador was carried out in \u201csupport and solidarity\u201d with the Mexican government, then led by President Andr\u00e9s Manuel L\u00f3pez Obrador, who thanked Nicaragua for doing so \u201cwithout being asked\u2026 because decency requires it, and we will continue,\u201d he said at a press conference on April 8.<br\/> <\/p>\n\n<p>Ortega and Murillo also broke <a href=\"https:\/\/confidencial.digital\/principal\/daniel-ortega-suspende-las-relaciones-diplomaticas-con-holanda\/\">diplomatic relations with the Netherlands <\/a>during the 43rd anniversary of the police force in September 2022. The dictator said the reason was that the Netherlands would not finance a medical care center on the Caribbean Coast, which he described as an act of \u201chuman misery\u201d against the country.  <\/p>\n\n<p>The Netherlands denied funding due to lack of transparency in the project, improper handling of funds, and the ongoing human rights violations against Nicaraguans. Hours after Ortega\u2019s remarks, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the decision to \u201cimmediately discontinue diplomatic relations\u201d with the Netherlands, which the regime labels \u201cpro-imperialist.\u201d <\/p>\n\n<p>The regime also <a href=\"https:\/\/confidencial.digital\/principal\/nicaragua-rompe-relaciones-con-taiwan-en-favor-de-china\/\">broke diplomatic relations with Taiwan<\/a> in December 2021. The Asian country was one of its main cooperators, however, it turned its back on Taiwan to recognize China as the &#8220;only legitimate government&#8221;. <\/p>\n\n<p>This was the second time that an Ortega government broke off relations with Taiwan.
