The dictatorship of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo expelled Spain\u2019s ambassador to Nicaragua, Sergio Farr\u00e9 Salv\u00e1,<\/a> and his deputy chief of mission, Minister-Counselor Miguel Mahiques N\u00fa\u00f1ez, one day after both met in Managua with a group of eight aid workers representing various development projects, who were also expelled from the country, according to sources linked to Spanish organizations working in Nicaragua.<\/p>\n\n

Farr\u00e9 Salv\u00e1 and Mahiques N\u00fa\u00f1ez met on Friday, January 23, 2026, with aid workers from Spanish NGOs to learn about the work they carry out in Nicaragua. On Saturday night, the two diplomats received a notification informing them that they had to \u201cleave the country immediately.\u201d Both have already returned to Madrid. <\/p>\n\n

According to the sources, the dictatorship initially gave no explanation to the Spanish government for the expulsion, although it later claimed that the ambassador had \u201coverstepped\u201d his authority and carried out \u201cactivities incompatible\u201d with his diplomatic status. However, no specific allegation against the diplomat has been made public, while Spain\u2019s Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the expulsion as \u201cunjustified.\u201d <\/p>\n\n

According to the Spanish newspaper The Objective<\/a>, those expelled by the Nicaraguan regime were seven people\u2014two diplomats and five aid workers who took part in the meeting in Managua. However, sources linked to Spanish NGOs working in Nicaragua revealed that the number of expelled aid workers is higher.<\/p>\n\n

Neither Ortega nor Murillo nor Nicaragua\u2019s Foreign Ministry has commented on the expulsion of the Spanish diplomat, nor on the expulsion of Nicaragua\u2019s ambassador in Madrid, Maurizio Alberto Gelli<\/a>, and another Managua-based diplomat, ordered by the Spanish government in \u201cstrict reciprocity\u201d for the \u201cunjust expulsion\u201d of Farr\u00e9 Salv\u00e1 and Mahiques N\u00fa\u00f1ez.<\/p>\n\n

Pro-government and Sandinista media outlets have also remained silent on the news, which comes amid ongoing tensions between the administrations of Ortega and Murillo and that of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro S\u00e1nchez.<\/p>\n\n

Sergio Ram\u00edrez points to regime\u2019s \u201cpermanent irritation\u201d<\/h2>\n\n

In an interview with The Objective<\/a>, Nicaraguan writer and former vice president Sergio Ram\u00edrez attributed the expulsion of the Spanish diplomats to \u201ca state of permanent irritation\u201d on the part of the Nicaraguan dictatorship toward the Spanish government and Spain in general, \u201cbecause of the support that has been given to Nicaraguan exiles and to those of us who lost our nationality by the arbitrary decision of the dictators in Nicaragua.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

Ram\u00edrez recalled that this \u201ctension\u201d in diplomatic relations between Nicaragua and Spain goes back years and pointed to what happened with the previous ambassador, Mar\u00eda de Mar Fern\u00e1ndez, who was denied reentry into the country. <\/p>\n\n

\u201cToday this crisis of permanent irritation has erupted once again. I believe there is a kind of arrogance on the part of a dictatorship like Nicaragua\u2019s, wanting to arbitrarily impose itself on countries such as Spain that have been supportive of Nicaragua and that also belong to a community of nations, the European Union, which has consistently spoken out against the dictatorship in Nicaragua,\u201d Ram\u00edrez emphasized.<\/p>\n\n

Sergio Farr\u00e9 Salv\u00e1 in his first posting as ambassador<\/h2>\n\n

According to the Spanish newspaper ABC<\/a>, the expulsion of Farr\u00e9 Salv\u00e1 and Mahiques N\u00fa\u00f1ez has surprised their Spanish diplomatic colleagues, who agree in describing the ambassador as \u201ca good guy\u201d and \u201ca great professional.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

Farr\u00e9 Salv\u00e1 has been a career diplomat since 2005 and has served at Spain\u2019s embassies in Khartoum, Sudan; Ljubljana, Slovenia; at Spain\u2019s Permanent Representation to the European Union in Brussels; La Paz, Bolivia; and in Brussels, Belgium.<\/p>\n\n

Nicaragua was his first posting as ambassador, and it would become the shortest assignment of his long diplomatic career, lasting only three weeks. On January 2, 2026, he presented his credentials to Nicaragua\u2019s \u201cco\u2013foreign minister,\u201d Valdrack Ludwig Jaentschke. <\/p>\n\n

On January 7, Ortega and Murillo published a Presidential Decree recognizing Farr\u00e9 Salv\u00e1 as \u201cthe extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassador of the Kingdom of Spain to the people and government of the Republic of Nicaragua,\u201d according to the Official Gazette La Gaceta.<\/a><\/p>\n\n

The spouses and \u201cco-presidents\u201d of Nicaragua ordered \u201cthe civil and military authorities to observe and ensure the prerogatives and immunities corresponding to his rank.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

According to ABC, the meeting attended by Sergio Farr\u00e9 Salv\u00e1 and Mahiques N\u00fa\u00f1ez \u201cwas intended solely to \u2018build bridges,\u2019 since an ambassador, as Spain\u2019s representative in a country, must be able to meet with whomever he wants, whenever he wants.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

\u201cIt is difficult to imagine that in such a short period of time he could have done something so serious as to warrant expulsion from the country he arrived in on December 2,\u201d the Spanish newspaper concludes.<\/p>\n\n

Tensions between Nicaragua and Spain<\/h2>\n\n

This is the second time in the past four years that Nicaragua and Spain have been left without diplomatic representation in Managua and Madrid.<\/p>\n\n

In 2021, the government of Pedro S\u00e1nchez recalled Spain\u2019s then-ambassador, Mar\u00eda del Mar Fern\u00e1ndez-Palacios<\/a>, for consultations in response to a statement from Nicaragua\u2019s Foreign Ministry that, according to Spain\u2019s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, contained \u201cgross falsehoods about Spanish judicial and electoral processes.\u201d Subsequently, regime authorities denied her return to Nicaragua. <\/p>\n\n

Spain\u2019s Foreign Ministry later summoned Nicaragua\u2019s then-ambassador in Madrid, Carlos Midence, to demand explanations for the refusal to allow the Spanish ambassador\u2019s return to Managua. A few hours later, the Nicaraguan government ordered Midence\u2019s removal from his duties, arguing that he was facing \u201ccontinuous interference-driven pressure and threats\u201d that made it \u201cimpossible to carry out diplomatic work.\u201d <\/p>\n\n

In 2022, Nicaragua appointed Maurizio Alberto Gelli as ambassador in Madrid. Meanwhile, Spain attempted to secure Fern\u00e1ndez-Palacios\u2019s return to Managua, but Ortega\u2019s government denied authorization, underscoring the fragility of relations between the two countries. <\/p>\n\n

Eventually, Pilar Mar\u00eda Terr\u00e9n was accredited as Spain\u2019s ambassador <\/a>and remained in the post until she was replaced by Sergio Farr\u00e9, in an attempt to close the diplomatic dispute\u2014one that has now reopened.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
