The United States demanded on January 17, 2026 that the Government of Nicaragua, directed by the spouses and co-presidents Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo, whom it labeled an \u201cillegitimate\u201d and \u201cparanoid regime\u201d, unconditionally release all political prisoners, following the release on January 10, 2026<\/a> of at least 24 dissidents and critics of the Sandinista executive.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cWe demand the unconditional release of all political prisoners, without exceptions, without house arrest, without new detentions,\u201d the United States Department of State\u2019s Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs demanded through its social media.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cFreedom means putting an end to the regime\u2019s cycle of repression,\u201d continued that bureau, which is attached to the State Department, in a message shared by the US Embassy in Managua on its social media accounts.<\/p>\n\n

The Government of Nicaragua announced on January 10, 2026 the release of \u201cdozens of people\u201d who had been detained for political reasons, according to humanitarian organizations. The release took place as the government celebrated the 19th anniversary of Ortega\u2019s return to power and amid pressure from the United States.<\/p>\n\n

That conditional release took place one day after the US Embassy in Managua recalled that after the \u201cimportant step\u201d taken by Venezuela to release an undetermined portion of its many hundreds of political prisoners, in Nicaragua there were also \u201cmore than 60 people\u201d who remain \u201cunjustly detained or disappeared.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

Nicaragua\u2019s Mechanism for the Recognition of Political Prisoners counted at least 24 political prisoners released on January 10, 2026, including six who were not on the official list of 62 detainees.<\/p>\n\n

The NGO Human Rights Collective for the Historical Memory of Nicaragua warned that those who have been released face a kind of \u201ccivil death,\u201d since they are denied access to employment, their mobility is restricted, and they must report daily to the authorities, \u201cmeaning they still do not enjoy freedom.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

\u201cNow those release from prison face constant police and paramilitary surveillance, must present themselves daily at police stations in their municipalities of residence, and have their rights to mobility, expression, assembly, and communication with the outside world restricted,\u201d the NGO denounced.<\/p>\n\n

Arrests over giving \u201clikes\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n

On the other hand, the bureau attached to the State Department criticized the Ortega-Murillo Government for \u201carresting Nicaraguans for simply giving \u2018likes\u2019<\/a> to posts on social media.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

That \u201cdemonstrates how paranoid the illegitimate Murillo-Ortega regime is,\u201d it stated.<\/p>\n\n

At least 60 Nicaraguans were arbitrarily detained by Nicaragua\u2019s National Police for \u201cexpressions of opinion\u201d or \u201ccomments on social media\u201d following the US military capture of Nicolas Maduro \u2014 an ally of Ortega and Murillo \u2014 according to the Blue and White Monitoring, a human rights organization.<\/p>\n\n

In February 2025, Secretary of State Marco Rubio labeled Nicaragua, along with Cuba and Venezuela, as \u201cenemies of humanity,\u201d adding that the Sandinista government \u201chas become a family dynasty with a co-presidency in which they have basically attempted to eliminate the Catholic Church, all religious expression, and anything that could threaten the regime\u2019s power.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
