While Nicol\u00e1s Maduro declared himself \u201cinnocent\u201d during his first appearance before a federal court in New York, in Managua Rosario Murillo called for \u201cinfinite brotherhood,\u201d denounced that \u201csecurity and peace\u201d in the Americas had been \u201cwounded,\u201d and accused the authorities of having \u201ckidnapped\u201d the Venezuelan president and his wife, Cilia Flores, in Caracas, without directly mentioning the United States or President Donald Trump. <\/p>\n\n

The \u201cco-president\u201d and spokesperson for Nicaragua\u2019s regime reiterated on January 5, 2026 the country\u2019s official position regarding the operation known as Absolute Resolution<\/em><\/a>, which took place on Saturday, January 3, 2026: \u201cWe have declared ourselves in infinite brotherhood with the glorious people of Bol\u00edvar, of Ch\u00e1vez, of Nicol\u00e1s\u2014that honorable people who today rise above all misery to demand justice and respect for the dignity of each and every person,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n\n

\u201cAnd for the lives of Nicol\u00e1s and Cilia, beloved brothers who were kidnapped and illegally transferred to the United States, where there is an attempt to continue wounding the authority, dignity, and honor of all,\u201d Murillo continued during her daily address on the regime\u2019s propaganda outlets. <\/p>\n\n

In an ambiguous tone, Murillo said that \u201cthese days, which have been very particular,\u201d have seen \u201csecurity and peace in our Caribbean America\u201d harmed, and she reiterated the Sandinista regime\u2019s solidarity with the Venezuelan people. <\/p>\n\n

However, neither in her address nor in the official statement issued by Nicaragua<\/a>\u2014which was signed by neither Ortega nor Murillo\u2014was the anti-imperialist language typically used by the regime when referring to the United States employed. <\/p>\n\n

Murillo Spoke, but sparingly\u2026 <\/h2>\n\n

In her brief message, Murillo avoided referring to the criminal charges facing Maduro. She also did not respond to the statements contained in the court filing that place Nicaragua on the drug trafficking route of the Cartel of the Suns<\/a>, linked to Chavismo. <\/p>\n\n

The \u201cco-president\u201d described the arrest as an act of aggression that violates the \u201cright to live peacefully and securely.\u201d <\/p>\n\n

Her statement, however, contrasts with Nicaragua\u2019s internal situation, where human rights violations are reported constantly, defenders and independent journalists are persecuted, and more than 60 political prisoners remain in the jails of the Ortega\u2013Murillo regime.<\/p>\n\n

Her remarks were made almost in parallel with the court hearing in the United States, where Maduro appeared for the first time before a federal judge<\/a>. \u201cI am not guilty, I am still the president of my country,\u201d Maduro said. <\/p>\n\n

During the hearing in a federal court in New York, Maduro spoke in Spanish and claimed he had been \u201ckidnapped\u201d from his residence in Caracas by U.S. forces. \u201cI am the president of Venezuela and I consider myself a prisoner of war,\u201d he stated. <\/p>\n\n

Nicaragua at the UN: Condemnation Without Naming Those Responsible<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n

On the diplomatic front, during an emergency session of the United Nations Security Council, Nicaragua\u2019s permanent representative, Jaime Hermida Castillo, read a message on behalf of the Ortega\u2013Murillo regime in which he avoided explicitly mentioning the United States or its president, Donald Trump.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cThis zone of peace must be absolutely respected by all governments of the world without exception, and especially by the members of this Security Council, which is responsible for international peace and security,\u201d Hermida told the body, echoing Murillo\u2019s remarks. <\/p>\n\n

He added that \u201cthis decision, and the desires and aspirations of our peoples, constitute a noble contribution to world peace, international law, and the Charter of the United Nations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

Although the regime\u2019s official statement maintains that \u201cNicaragua will always stand with Venezuela,\u201d the speech lacked the anti-imperialist language that has characterized Ortega and Murillo\u2019s foreign policy for years. <\/p>\n\n

Cuba\u2019s Presence in Venezuela<\/h2>\n\n

The U.S. operation against Maduro revived accusations by the United States against Cuba. <\/p>\n\n

The Cuban regime declared official mourning from 6:00 a.m. on Monday, January 5, 2026, until midnight on Tuesday, following the death of 32 Cuban citizens during the January 3 operation in Venezuela.<\/p>\n\n

Those who died, Cuba added, \u201cwere carrying out missions representing the Revolutionary Armed Forces and the Ministry of the Interior, at the request of counterpart agencies in the South American country,\u201d without explicitly stating that they were part of Maduro\u2019s personal security detail.<\/p>\n\n

The acknowledgment of Cuban casualties reignited an old controversy. In 2019, the United States had already accused Cuba of maintaining a military and security contingent in Venezuela. Havana denied it at the time. <\/p>\n\n

\u201cWashington goes so far as to pressure third-country governments to try to persuade Cuba to withdraw this alleged and implausible military and security support, and even to cease providing support and solidarity to Venezuela (\u2026) It blatantly lies by claiming that Cuba maintains thousands of military and security personnel in Venezuela, influencing and determining what happens in that brotherly country,\u201d Cuba reportedly responded in 2019 in a statement<\/a> published on the front pages of the main official newspapers and reproduced by the website Cubadebate. <\/p>\n\n

The Ortega\u2013Murillo regime also issued a statement in which it shared the \u201cindignation and pain\u201d of the Cuban government and people over the death of 32 Cubans during what it described as an \u201cillegal\u201d U.S. military attack in Venezuela.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cWe share the indignation and pain of the people and government of Cuba, and particularly of the families of the fallen comrades in the illegal attack against Venezuela, and in these tragic moments we send our affection, recognition, and solidarity to the brave people of Fidel,\u201d the statement said. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
