{"id":178420,"date":"2025-11-19T13:49:08","date_gmt":"2025-11-19T19:49:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/confidencial.digital\/sin-categoria\/nicaraguan-costa-rican-doctor-moved-to-house-arrest\/"},"modified":"2025-11-22T02:02:38","modified_gmt":"2025-11-22T08:02:38","slug":"nicaraguan-costa-rican-doctor-moved-to-house-arrest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/confidencial.digital\/en\/english\/nicaraguan-costa-rican-doctor-moved-to-house-arrest\/","title":{"rendered":"Nicaraguan-Costa Rican Doctor Moved to House Arrest"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo secretly released the young Costa Rican-Nicaraguan doctor Yerri Estrada \u2014 who had been in \u201cforced disappearance\u201d for three months \u2014 and placed him under house arrest, the Legal Defense Unit (UDJ) confirmed to <strong>CONFIDENCIAL<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cThe last person (transferred to house arrest) that we know of is Yerri. We have no information about any others, and we don\u2019t know what will happen. Hopefully, more people will be released \u2014 that\u2019s what we want,\u201d said Claudia Pineda, director of the UDJ.<\/p>\n\n<p>According to Pineda, the families of those released to house arrest have been threatened so that they remain silent and do not speak about the conditions of the release. \u201cThe information hasn\u2019t necessarily come from the family, because the families have also been threatened that if anything \u2018leaks,\u2019 so to speak, there will be consequences,\u201d Pineda said. <\/p>\n\n<p>The young doctor was detained on August 13, 2025, and remained in a condition of \u201cforced disappearance\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/confidencial.digital\/en\/english\/nicaraguan-regime-releases-proof-of-life-for-political-prisoner-yerri-estrada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">until September 12<\/a>, when he was presented before state propaganda media. Estrada was sent to house arrest at his home in Le\u00f3n. However, he must report daily to sign in at the police station.  <\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cIn the end, it has been confirmed that all those people who have been released and are under a control regime. Some have permission to move around, others do not, and all must report to the police stations assigned to them,\u201d Pineda explained.<\/p>\n\n<p>The regime began these silent releases on November 7, 2025, when it sent another <a href=\"https:\/\/confidencial.digital\/en\/nation\/ortega-regime-releases-five-political-prisoners-over-60-under-threat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">five political prisoners<\/a> home without publicly explaining the terms of their release or the restrictions imposed.<\/p>\n\n<p>The first to be released were:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Leo Catalino C\u00e1rcamo Herrera, 62, originally from Le\u00f3n.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Julio Antonio Quintana Carvajal, de 67 a\u00f1os, tambi\u00e9n de Le\u00f3n.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fabio Alberto C\u00e1ceres Larios, 65, from Chinandega. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ronald Leiva Silva, from Matagalpa. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Jorge Danilo Portocarrero Arg\u00fcello, from Jinotepe.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-excarcelacion-tras-suplica-de-su-madre\">Release After His Mother\u2019s Plea <\/h2>\n\n<p>Rosa Ruiz, the mother of the 30-year-old doctor, had denounced on the program <em>Esta Semana<\/em>, broadcast on <strong>CONFIDENCIAL\u2019s<\/strong> YouTube channel, that<a href=\"https:\/\/confidencial.digital\/en\/english\/rosa-ruiz-i-have-no-one-in-nicaragua-to-ask-about-yerri\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> her son had been tortured<\/a> \u2014 but she had no way of knowing his current situation in prison.<\/p>\n\n<p>She also explained that her other two children, Maura Estrada and a 14-year-old minor, along with a granddaughter just five years old, are now \u201cforcibly displaced.\u201d They were forced to leave their home after enduring threats, intimidation, and harassment by police and civilian supporters of the Sandinista regime. <\/p>\n\n<p>On November 13, 2025, Ruiz demanded that the Ortega regime hand over her son to the Costa Rican Embassy or the U.S. Embassy in Managua. \u201cHe hasn\u2019t committed any crime. He is a clean, honest person \u2014 the only thing he did was go out in 2018 to help the injured and elderly people who were beaten by paramilitaries and Sandinista Youth mobs,\u201d his mother said.  <\/p>\n\n<p>In September 2025, the US State Department demanded that the dictatorship reveal the whereabouts of the young Costa Rican-Nicaraguan and requested proof of life. According to Pineda, the sustained \u201ccampaign\u201d by the US government may be \u201cone of the reasons\u201d for the recent releases.  <\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cThat might be one of the reasons \u2014 that there is pressure from the State Department. Another, which may also be part of the explanation, is the health condition of the detainees. Some of those released are elderly people with health problems,\u201d Pineda noted.<\/p>\n\n<p>As of October 29, 2025, the Mechanism for the Recognition of Political Prisoners had identified 77 people imprisoned, more than half of them in <a href=\"https:\/\/confidencial.digital\/en\/nation\/where-are-they-more-than-30-political-prisoners-under-forced-disappearance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">forced disappearance<\/a>.
