Media outlets in the regime\u2019s propaganda apparatus released images on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, of Nicaraguan journalist Fabiola Tercero Castro<\/a>. She had been forcibly disappeared since July 12, 2024, when police officers raided her home in Managua.<\/p>\n\n

Since then, various national and international organizations<\/a> working on political prisoners and press freedom had described Fabiola Tercero\u2019s case as \u201cparticularly concerning,\u201d given the long period in which no information about her was available.<\/p>\n\n

The journalist appeared alongside her mother, Rosalinda Castro Garc\u00eda, who, according to regime propaganda outlets, demanded that her daughter\u2019s image no longer be used as that of a \u201cdisappeared\u201d person.<\/p>\n\n

The communicator\u2019s case, however, fits into a systematic pattern of repression, the criminalization of journalism, and attacks on freedom of expression in Nicaragua. <\/p>\n\n

There was never any official record indicating that Fabiola Tercero had been transferred to the women\u2019s prison known as \u201cLa Esperanza,\u201d as has happened with other female political prisoners since 2018.<\/p>\n\n

According to records from various human rights organizations, during the raid the Ortega police seized her computer and other work materials.<\/p>\n\n

Tercero is a well-known Nicaraguan journalist and feminist. In 2017, she created El Rinc\u00f3n de Fabi, a platform promoting reading in order to attract new readers in Nicaragua\u2019s digital era through book-giving dynamics such as trades and raffles. <\/p>\n\n

Campaigns in Support of Fabiola Tercero <\/h2>\n\n

In July 2025, when one year had passed since her detention, the United States Government demanded that the regime release the journalist. <\/p>\n\n

As of October 2025, the Mechanism for the Recognition of Political Prisoners of Nicaragua, which operates from exile, had recorded 77 political prisoners, 36 of them under conditions of \u201cforced disappearance.\u201d <\/p>\n\n

Currently, according to the Foundation for Freedom of Expression and Democracy (FLED), at least 293 journalists and media workers are living in exile \u2014 victims of forced displacement, which has become the only means of survival in the face of state persecution. <\/p>\n\n

Five Political Prisoners Released <\/h2>\n\n

Fabiola Tercero\u2019s appearance comes just a few days after the release of five political prisoners<\/a> \u2014 on November 8, 2025 \u2014 who were placed under house arrest and threatened with reprisals if they spoke to the media, civil society organizations, or human rights groups. <\/p>\n\n
