{"id":177208,"date":"2025-11-02T01:25:00","date_gmt":"2025-11-02T07:25:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/confidencial.digital\/sin-categoria\/in-nicaragua-the-dream-they-couldnt-steal-former-uca-students-graduate\/"},"modified":"2025-11-05T16:28:25","modified_gmt":"2025-11-05T22:28:25","slug":"in-nicaragua-the-dream-they-couldnt-steal-former-uca-students-graduate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/confidencial.digital\/en\/english\/in-nicaragua-the-dream-they-couldnt-steal-former-uca-students-graduate\/","title":{"rendered":"In Nicaragua, The Dream They Couldn\u2019t Steal: Former UCA Students Graduate"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>\u201cI feel happy because I\u2019m finally about to graduate and get my degree,\u201d says Mariana, a former student of the Central American University (UCA), which has now been <a href=\"https:\/\/confidencial.digital\/nacion\/daniel-ortega-ordena-confiscacion-de-la-universidad-centroamericana\/\">closed and confiscated for two years<\/a> by order of the dictatorship of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo. In early November 2025, this young woman will earn her bachelor\u2019s degree in Psychology after taking online classes at the Jesuit Rafael Land\u00edvar University (URL) in Guatemala.   <\/p>\n\n<p><em>Mariana<\/em> only needed one class and her thesis to finish her studies at the UCA when the dictatorship shut it down on August 16, 2023.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cAfter they stole the UCA, I never thought (my graduation) would happen so soon. At one point, I even planned to start my degree all over again,\u201d she recalls.<\/p>\n\n<p>After the abrupt closure of the UCA in Nicaragua, the \u201cJos\u00e9 Sime\u00f3n Ca\u00f1as\u201d Central American University (UCA) in El Salvador and Rafael Land\u00edvar University (URL) in Guatemala\u2014both Jesuit institutions\u2014offered students the opportunity to continue their studies, on the condition that they complete at least one year there. The graduation ceremonies took place in El Salvador at the end of October 2025, and in Guatemala during the first days of November. <\/p>\n\n<p>At first, the Psychology program was offered only in person, so <em>Mariana<\/em> couldn\u2019t begin her studies until July 2024. <\/p>\n\n<p>The hardest part, she says, was the lost time. \u201cIt\u2019s been a setback, having to retake classes and even write a new thesis, although this time I did a systematic review, which is a completely different format,\u201d she explains.  <\/p>\n\n<p>She admits that many of her classmates already had professional plans for 2023, when they were supposed to graduate. Still, she insists she\u2019s happy to be graduating from a Jesuit university that shares \u201cthe same ideals and values\u201d as the UCA in Nicaragua. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tuvo-que-trabajar-y-seguir-estudiando\">She Had to Work While Continuing Her Studies<\/h2>\n\n<p><em>Mariana<\/em> describes continuing her education as \u201ca major challenge.\u201d Monday through Friday she works in the Human Resources department of a manufacturing company. On Saturdays she attended online classes from the Guatemalan university. \u201cI ended up exhausted because I hardly had any time to rest,\u201d she says.   <\/p>\n\n<p>She was able to continue studying thanks to a scholarship. \u201cThe costs were minimal,\u201d she explains.  <\/p>\n\n<p>Although she\u2019d like to specialize in labor law and continue her professional growth, for now, she finds it difficult to study, at least in Nicaragua. \u201cI\u2019m the one supporting my family; I live only with my mother, so for now I\u2019m not planning to go for a master\u2019s degree,\u201d <em>Mariana<\/em> says.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-no-podre-ir-a-mi-graduacion\">\u201cI Won\u2019t Be Able to Go to My Graduation\u201d<\/h2>\n\n<p>Although <em>Mariana<\/em> would love to attend her graduation ceremony, she says she won\u2019t be able to, even though she\u2019d love to. \u201cFirst, because I\u2019m working, and second, because I\u2019m afraid they won\u2019t let me return to Nicaragua,\u201d she says.  <\/p>\n\n<p><em>Mariana<\/em> is referring to the forced exile with which the Ortega-Murillo dictatorship selectively punishes thousands of Nicaraguans. For that reason, she notes, many students taking online classes won\u2019t attend their ceremonies out of fear. <\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cThe university is helping us by taking care of all the paperwork remotely,\u201d she adds. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-seis-de-cada-diez-buscaron-otras-universidades-jesuitas\">Six Out of Ten Chose Other Jesuit Universities<\/h2>\n\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/confidencial.digital\/nacion\/a-un-ano-del-robo-a-la-uca-en-nicarag-aun-me-siento-en-el-limbo\/\"><strong>CONFIDENCIAL<\/strong> report <\/a>published in August 2024, one year after the confiscation of the UCA, revealed new data from the Jos\u00e9 Sime\u00f3n Ca\u00f1as Central American University (UCA) in El Salvador and the Rafael Land\u00edvar University in Guatemala. The figures showed that of the 5,000 students enrolled at the UCA when it was shut down, 2,301 applied to other <a href=\"https:\/\/confidencial.digital\/nacion\/universidades-de-la-red-jesuita-ausjal-abren-sus-aulas-a-los-estudiantes-de-la-uca\/\">Jesuit universities <\/a>in Central America, a proportion of six out of every ten students.<\/p>\n\n<p>At least 600 Nicaraguan students continued their degrees in the universities of El Salvador and Guatemala.<\/p>\n\n<p>In 2025, the UCA, founded in Nicaragua by the Society of Jesus in 1960, would have celebrated 65 years of educational work, having trained several generations of professionals.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cThey wiped out a university of great national importance, one that fostered critical thinking, civic awareness, and contributed to dialogue and scientific research,\u201d said the late Father Jose Maria Tojeira, <a href=\"https:\/\/confidencial.digital\/nacion\/robo-a-la-uca-suma-mas-de-60-millones-de-dolares-en-infraestructura-y-propiedades\/\">spokesperson for the Society of Jesus in Nicaragua<\/a>, in his final interview with <strong>CONFIDENCIAL<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-fue-como-volver-a-vivir\">\u201cIt Was Like Coming Back to Life\u201d<\/h2>\n\n<p>When the UCA was shut down, <em>Cristina\u2019s<\/em> world collapsed. She enrolled for one semester at the Catholic University of Nicaragua, but although \u201cit didn\u2019t feel like home,\u201d she thought \u201cit was the only option\u201d to graduate. <\/p>\n\n<p>So when she learned about the possibility of studying at a Jesuit university, she signed up immediately. \u201cIt was like coming back to life; I didn\u2019t think twice,\u201d she says.  <\/p>\n\n<p><em>Cristina<\/em> began studying fully online at Rafael Land\u00edvar University (URL). \u201cI admit it was a challenge, because spending an entire day in class from seven in the morning to four in the afternoon, in front of a screen with little interaction among classmates, eventually became exhausting,\u201d she describes. <\/p>\n\n<p>What made it harder to finish her studies remotely, she says, was that she missed in-person classes and knew that many of the classmates she had spent time with had transferred to El Salvador. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-me-iria-de-nicaragua-a-pesar-del-miedo\">\u201cI\u2019d Leave Nicaragua Despite the Fear\u201d<\/h2>\n\n<p>For <em>Cristina<\/em>, the two years it took her to finally earn her degree were also years of personal growth. \u201cI had to retake only a few courses, and they helped reinforce knowledge that was starting to fade (\u2026) I feel that each professor contributed something new and significant,\u201d she says.  <\/p>\n\n<p>She won\u2019t travel to Guatemala, as she has little time to plan and fears not being able to return. \u201cThat makes me sad,\u201d she admits.  <\/p>\n\n<p><em>Cristina<\/em> now works as a human talent analyst for a well-known industrial company in Nicaragua. She hopes to continue specializing \u201cin training programs for developing new talent, with the goal of creating a consulting firm in the future.\u201d <\/p>\n\n<p>Regarding the possibility of staying in Nicaragua, she says she\u2019s \u201copen to opportunities.\u201d <\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cIf at some point I can migrate to another country, I\u2019d go, despite the fear and the challenges it might bring,\u201d she concludes.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-no-lograron-robarse-mi-sueno\">\u201cThey Couldn\u2019t Steal My Dream\u201d<\/h2>\n\n<p>\u201cFinishing my Marketing degree will be impossible,\u201d thought <em><em>Kevin<\/em><\/em> when the sudden closure of the UCA was announced. He even considered continuing at the Casimiro Sotelo Montenegro National University (UNCSM), controlled by the Sandinista regime and operating in the facilities confiscated from the UCA. <\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cTo me it was a nightmare, but I had no other choice when they announced the final closure of the UCA,\u201d he recalls.<\/p>\n\n<p>However, when the opportunity arose to continue studying, even remotely, he didn\u2019t hesitate. <em>Kevin<\/em> is now about to finish his degree at the Jesuit Rafael Land\u00edvar University in Guatemala. <\/p>\n\n<p>For this young man, originally from a rural community in Nicaragua, it\u2019s a major achievement because it\u2019s been \u201cincredibly hard\u201d to become a professional. First, in April 2022, he lost his scholarship when <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/confidencial.digital\/confidencialtv\/regimen-completa-venganza-contra-la-uca-y-la-excluye-del-cnu-y-el-6-constitucional\/\">the regime expelled the UCA from the National Council of Universities (CNU).<\/a><\/strong> That decision stripped the Jesuit university of its constitutional six-percent funding, which had provided hundreds of scholarships. <\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cAt that point, I had to take fewer classes and find a job to pay for them,\u201d <em>Kevin<\/em> explains.<\/p>\n\n<p>Today he believes all those obstacles have motivated him to keep fighting to become the first professional in his family. \u201cI\u2019m proud of my values and that they couldn\u2019t steal my dream of earning a degree from a prestigious Jesuit university,\u201d he says.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-un-futuro-incierto-pero-con-esperanza\">An Uncertain but Hopeful Future<\/h2>\n\n<p><em>Kevin<\/em> still doesn\u2019t know what his professional future will hold. For now, he\u2019s working in his field but hopes to continue growing.  <\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d love to study at a university in Argentina or Spain, but for now I need to gain experience and save money,\u201d he says. <\/p>\n\n<p>He won\u2019t attend his graduation and will avoid posting about his academic achievement on social media, he believes it\u2019s safer to remain quiet. <\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve seen some of my former classmates post that they graduated from Casimiro Sotelo University and celebrate it, but there\u2019s sadness in their words. I feel what they made us go through isn\u2019t fair,\u201d he laments. <\/p>\n\n<p>Still, Kevin holds out hope that one day the UCA will reopen, and its degrees will regain \u201cthe recognition they deserve.\u201d <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-graduada-en-el-salvador-pero-volvera-a-nicaragua\">Graduated in El Salvador, But Will Return to Nicaragua<\/h2>\n\n<p><em>Cecilia<\/em> recently graduated from the UCA in El Salvador, where she went to live after being offered a scholarship to continue her studies. She\u2019ll stay there for a while longer but wants to return to Nicaragua as soon as possible.  <\/p>\n\n<p>When the UCA was confiscated, she was less than a year away from finishing her degree in Psychology. <\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cWhen they told us there was an opportunity to study at a Jesuit university, I was happy, but I was also very afraid when I found out it was only offered in person,\u201d she says. <\/p>\n\n<p>Now, <em>Cecilia<\/em> believes she made the right decision to leave the country. \u201cWhat matters is that I have my degree, and I hope to start practicing soon,\u201d she insists.  <\/p>\n\n<p>However, her biggest fear now is that the Sandinista regime won\u2019t let her return. \u201cI\u2019m afraid of being unable to go back to my country,\u201d she confesses. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cI feel happy because I\u2019m finally about to graduate and get my degree,\u201d says Mariana, a former student of the Central American University (UCA), which has now been closed and confiscated for two years by order of the dictatorship of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo.
