His work transcends genres and decades: over 25 albums, dozens of artistic collaborations, popular anthems, and a career forged without pause since the mid-1960s.  <\/p>\n\n<p>From his early love songs, through anti-dictatorship resistance anthems, to Afro-Caribbean rhythms, his guitar has borne witness to the history of Central American peoples \u2014 their hopes and contradictions.<\/p>\n\n<p>The documentary revisits places that marked his life, such as the \u201cPensi\u00f3n Tinoco\u201d in San Jose, where he lived and sang his first love songs by the train tracks, <a href=\"https:\/\/confidencial.digital\/nacion\/luis-enrique-mejia-godoy-y-sus-tres-patrias-nicaragua-costa-rica-y-la-musica\/\">having arrived in 1967 to study medicine at the University of Costa Rica<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n<p>Luis Enrique also speaks about his role in testimonial music and his closeness to the Sandinista Revolution. Although he never \u201cformally\u201d joined the FSLN, he lent his voice to the anti-Somoza cause and gave up all rights to his revolutionary songs. However, he was never blind to the contradictions of power. \u201cI regret what I didn\u2019t do, not what I did,\u201d he reflects candidly.   <\/p>\n\n<p>Now at 80, he also reflects on <a href=\"https:\/\/confidencial.digital\/migrantes\/noticias\/nicamigrante-soy-una-cancion-de-luis-enrique-mejia-godoy-para-la-nicaragua-migrante\/\">his second exile in Costa Rica<\/a>: \u201cI long for Nicaragua. I carry it tattooed on my soul. No one can take that from me. But I\u2019m happy \u2014 not because of exile, but because I want to be happy, and that is a punch in the face to power. Resistance.\u201d <\/p>\n\n<p>Through family memories, anecdotes with his brother Carlos Mej\u00eda, testimonies of his nephew<a href=\"https:\/\/confidencial.digital\/revista-niu\/entrevista-con-luis-enrique-principe-de-la-salsa-nicaragua-esta-en-mi\/\">-salsa singer Luis Enrique Mej\u00eda L\u00f3pez-<\/a>, and his longtime friend singer-songwriter Adri\u00e1n Goizueta, the documentary portrays the artist from &#8220;<em>Un Pueblo Sencillo&#8221; <\/em>(A Simple Town) author of great hits such as <em>Pobre la Mar\u00eda<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-una-celebracion-llena-de-nostalgia\">A Celebration Full of Nostalgia<\/h2>\n\n<p>Mej\u00eda Godoy celebrated his musical journey in grand fashion with a concert titled <a href=\"https:\/\/confidencial.digital\/revista-niu\/luis-enrique-mejia-godoy-celebrara-una-vida-con-un-concierto-en-costa-rica\/\">One Life, 80 Years<\/a>, held on June 15, 2025, at the Melico Salazar Theater in San Jose. The Costa Rican authorities declared the concert an event of cultural interest, in recognition of the Nicaraguan singer-songwriter\u2019s \u201cinvaluable contribution to Costa Rican culture over 60 years of fraternal coexistence.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n<p>The celebratory concert is part of the documentary\u2019s narrative, where the artist performed his most iconic songs: <em>Pobre la Mar\u00eda<\/em>; <em>Yo soy de un pueblo sencillo<\/em>(I&#8217;m From A Simple Town); <em>Hijos del ma\u00edz<\/em>(Children of Corn); <em>Hilachas de sol <\/em>(Threads of Sunlight); <em>Mujer de carne y hueso<\/em>(Woman of Flesh and Blood).
