No one expected that this massive demonstration, baptized as the \u201cmother of all marches\u201d, would become the scene of another massacre. On a day dedicated to honoring Nicaraguan mothers, 19 of them lost their children.  <\/em><\/p>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n<p>Among those leading the march were Jessica Rivas, Cela Urbina, Juana Adilia Ram\u00edrez, Rosa Amanda Cruz, Martha Huete, and Janeira L\u00f3pez\u2014some of the brave \u201cApril Mothers\u201d <strong>who headed the largest protest in Nicaragua during the April Rebellion, held on May 30, 2018,<\/strong> which also happened to be Nicaraguan Mother\u2019s Day.<\/p>\n\n<p>Driven by solidarity and a demand for justice for the 90 victims<b>\u2014<\/b>the official count at the time<b>\u2014<\/b>thousands of self-organized citizens joined what became known as \u201cthe mother of all marches.\u201d <strong>They never imagined that the day would end in another massacre, claiming 19 more lives.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n<p>Children, elderly people, farmers, housewives, workers, university students, unemployed people, laborers, teachers\u2026 thousands of self-organized Nicaraguans marched that day in Managua and other cities across Nicaragua.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>Many carried flowers and approached to embrace the mothers leading the protest, who held photos of their children and a large banner that read: \u201cWe demand justice!\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n<p>Signs at the march read, \u201cNothing to celebrate,\u201d \u201cSilence,\u201d and \u201cWhat happened to your children hurts me\u2014they were my brothers.\u201d The march was led by the newly formed <a href=\"https:\/\/confidencial.digital\/nacion\/madres-de-abril-presentaran-segunda-edicion-del-libro-interactivo-ama-y-construye-la-memoria\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mothers of April Association<\/a>, which brings together mothers, daughters, widows, and relatives of the deceased.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>On a day when they would have expected to be at home receiving a loving gesture from their children, these women stood there without them\u2014receiving hugs from strangers and mourning their absence together. <\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" <strong>endless sea of blue and white<\/strong> stretched from the Jean Paul Genie Roundabout all the way to the Central American University (UCA), where the march was supposed to end with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.confidencial.digital\/nacion\/las-madres-que-se-volvieron-madres-de-abril-el-30-de-mayo\/\">a statement that they never got to read<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p>While thousands moved toward the Rub\u00e9n Dar\u00edo Roundabout, others were just crossing the Centroam\u00e9rica overpass about four kilometers away, with many more joining from different streets.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>\u201cGet out!\u201d they shouted at Daniel Ortega<\/strong>, <strong>sidelined at an event with public employees where he declared<\/strong>, \u201cNicaragua belongs to all of us, and here we all stay.\u201d The mothers who were marching alongside continued forward\u2014but then the gunfire began. <\/p>\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.confidencial.digital\/nacion\/nuevas-pruebas-forenses-demuestran-responsabilidad-del-gobierno-en-la-masacre-del-dia-de-las-madres\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Police and paramilitaries <\/a><\/strong>opened fire from the area near the National Engineering University and the Dennis Mart\u00ednez National Stadium, now renamed \u201cSovereignty.\u201d <strong>And more lives were lost\u2014Orlando, Maycol, Jonathan, Francisco\u2026 19 total. <\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-abrazos-lagrimas-flores-protesta\">Hugs, tears, flowers, protest&#8230;<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">With flowers, embraces, and blue-and-white flags, hundreds of thousands of Nicaraguans took part in the largest civic march of the April Rebellion, held in solidarity with the mothers of the murdered. <strong>Hundreds approached to hug them, cry with them, or give them On May 30, 2021, on the third anniversary of the massacre against the Mother\u2019s Day march, <strong>CONFIDENCIAL<\/strong> published the stories of <a href=\"https:\/\/confidencial.digital\/especiales\/las-19-madres-que-perdieron-sus-hijos-en-la-masacre-del-30-de-mayo\/#m01\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the 19 women who became Mothers of April that day<\/a>. Here are some excerpts.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Yadira Cordoba, mother of Orlando Aguirre Cordoba<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.confidencial.digital\/nacion\/las-19-madres-que-perdieron-sus-hijos-en-la-masacre-del-30-de-mayo\/#m01\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.confidencial.digital\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Yadira-Cordoba-madre-de-Orlando-Aguirre-Cordoba.jpg\" alt=\"Yadira Cordoba, mother of Orlando Aguirre Cordoba\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p>Yadira C\u00f3rdoba remembers the outrage her son, Orlando Aguirre C\u00f3rdoba, felt over the killings committed by the dictatorship during the protests. That\u2019s why the teenager insisted that they attend the march in solidarity with the women who had lost their children. <\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cThat day I felt very tired and didn\u2019t go to the march. But I never took away his desire to go. No one could have imagined what was going to happen.   <strong>No one thought they would dare attack. And that day, I became one of the mothers <\/strong>&#8220;, Yadira recalls in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.museodelamemorianicaragua.org\/medios\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AMA y Construye la Memoria: Libro Arte Interactivo<\/a> (Love and Build Memory: Interactive Art Book), published by the Mothers of April Association and the AMA y No Olvida Museum.<\/p>\n\n<p>A friend from her church called to tell her that \u201cOrlandito\u201d<b>\u2014<\/b>as they called her son<b>\u2014<\/b>was injured. Desperate, she rushed to the hospital. But Orlando had already passed away.  <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>\u201cRemembering Orlandito\u2019s jokes makes me cry. There will never be another May 30 for me; that day will no longer be Mother\u2019s Day for me,\u201d says Yadira C\u00f3rdoba.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Paula Hernandez, mother of Maycol Gonzalez<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.confidencial.digital\/nacion\/las-19-madres-que-perdieron-sus-hijos-en-la-masacre-del-30-de-mayo\/#m02\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.confidencial.digital\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Paula-Hernandez-madre-de-Maycol-Cipriano-Gonzalez.jpg\" alt=\"Paula Hern&#xE1;ndez, mother of Maycol Cipriano Gonz&#xE1;lez Hern&#xE1;ndez\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p>Paula Hern\u00e1ndez says her family joined the protests starting April 21, after her nephew, Jeisson Chavarr\u00eda, was killed in Ticuantepe.<\/p>\n\n<p>Forty days later, her son Maycol Cipriano Gonz\u00e1lez Hern\u00e1ndez was also killed. On May 30, she recalls, the whole family took a truck to join the march, but Paula thought her son wouldn\u2019t be able to come because he had gone to work. Later, she spotted him in the crowd. \u201cThat was the last time I saw him,\u201d she laments.    <\/p>\n\n<p>Maycol was the oldest of his siblings and was paying for his English degree with great sacrifice, convinced it was his chance to give his family a better life. At night, in his free time, he worked on building a house for his mother. He wasn\u2019t able to finish it.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Guillermina Zapata, mother of Francisco Javier Reyes Zapata<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.confidencial.digital\/nacion\/las-19-madres-que-perdieron-sus-hijos-en-la-masacre-del-30-de-mayo\/#m03\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.confidencial.digital\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Francisco-Javier-Reyes-Zapata-madre-de-Guillermina-Mercedes-Zapata.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p>Guillermina Mercedes Zapata was given a Nicaraguan flag stained with the blood of her son, Francisco Javier Reyes Zapata, on Good Friday in 2019\u2014almost a year after he was killed.  <\/p>\n\n<p>A video of her son being transported on a motorcycle to the hospital was shared thousands of times on social media. He died almost immediately. A high-caliber bullet pierced the back of his skull and exited through his right eye.  <\/p>\n\n<p>She also took part in the massive march, and they had agreed to meet near Metrocentro to leave together. But Guillermina was delayed at work, and Francisco Javier left on time toward the Jean Paul Genie Roundabout, where the protest began. They never met.  <\/p>\n\n<p>When the shooting started, she ran toward Cristo Rey Roundabout. From there, she called her son\u2019s cell phone\u2014but there was no answer. When she called the home phone, another one of her children told her the hospital had called to report that her brother had been killed.   <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Josefa Meza, mother of Jonathan Moraz\u00e1n Meza<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.confidencial.digital\/nacion\/las-19-madres-que-perdieron-sus-hijos-en-la-masacre-del-30-de-mayo\/#m04\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.confidencial.digital\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Josefa-Meza-madre-de-Jonathan-Morazan-Meza.jpg\" alt=\"Josefa Meza, mother of Jonathan Moraz&#xE1;n Meza\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p>\u201cTake care, son. They&#8217;re cracking down harder on young people,\u201d Josefa Meza warned her son, Jonathan Moraz\u00e1n Meza, before he left home for the \u201cMother\u2019s Day March.\u201d She also attended, dressed in black, in solidarity with the mothers of those who had been killed. <\/p>\n\n<p>When the attack began, she was near Avenida Universitaria. She saw the crowd running in panic, trying to find shelter. The first thing she did was call Jonathan over and over. The sound of the voicemail only deepened her fear.   <\/p>\n\n<p>Half an hour later, Josefa got a call from her son\u2019s phone\u2014but it was from the hospital. When she arrived, the medical report offered no hope. The brain scan showed his brain stem had been dislodged. Jonathan died on June 1, 2018.   <\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cHe was unconscious the entire time because the shot went straight to the brain stem. It was meant to kill\u2014a sniper\u2019s shot, precise and deliberate,\u201d Josefa says.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>\u201cThere will never again be a Mother\u2019s Day on May 30. Never again! We\u2019ll only celebrate Mother\u2019s Day once there is justice,\u201d she insists.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Alejandra Rivera, mother of Daniel Jos\u00edas Reyes Rivera<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.confidencial.digital\/nacion\/las-19-madres-que-perdieron-sus-hijos-en-la-masacre-del-30-de-mayo\/#m05\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.confidencial.digital\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Alejandra-Rivera-madre-de-Daniel-Josias-Reyes-Rivera.jpg\" alt=\"Alejandra Rivera, mother of Daniel Jos&#xED;as Reyes Rivera\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p>\u201cDon&#8217;t worry, nothing is going to happen to me,\u201d Daniel Jos\u00edas Reyes Rivera said to his mother, Alejandra Rivera, on one of the many days she insisted he not go out on the streets between April and May 2018.<\/p>\n\n<p>From the start of the protests, her son stopped going to university, but every day he would leave the house without saying where he was headed. They later learned he was joining the demonstrations. <\/p>\n\n<p>On May 30, he left home to take part in the Mother\u2019s Day March. \u201cHe was up front, in the line of students who formed a human chain to protect the mothers,\u201d Alejandra recalls in the book by the Asociaci\u00f3n Madres de Abril and the \u201cAMA y No Olvida\u201d Museum. <\/p>\n\n<p>She was watching the march on television and grew distressed when she saw the attack on the massive crowd begin. She called Daniel several times, but he didn\u2019t answer. From that moment, he was missing\u2014and it wasn\u2019t until two days later that they found out his body was at the Institute of Forensic Medicine.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Marta Portobanco, mother of Edgard Guevara Portobanco<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.confidencial.digital\/nacion\/las-19-madres-que-perdieron-sus-hijos-en-la-masacre-del-30-de-mayo\/#m06\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.confidencial.digital\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Marta-Portobanco-Vallejos-madre-de-Egard-Isaac-Guevara-Portobanco.jpg\" alt=\"Marta Portobanco Vallejos, mother of Edgard Isaac Guevara Portobanco\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p>On May 30, 2018, Marta Portobanco Vallejos was at home watching the news. She had stayed behind to care for her younger grandchildren while her daughters, sons-in-law, and older grandchildren joined the massive Mother\u2019s Day March. That\u2019s when her son, Edgard Guevara Portobanco, arrived. He lay down beside her, and they continued watching TV.   <\/p>\n\n<p>When news reports began covering the gunfire at the march, he got up and said, \u201cI\u2019ll be right back, I\u2019m running an errand.\u201d He left on his motorcycle. She never imagined he was heading to the very place they were watching on television, where people were fleeing in terror.   <\/p>\n\n<p>Determined, Edgard went to the Enel Central area, where he joined a group of \u201cblue and white\u201d motorcyclists, who formed a barrier to block a mob from advancing on the protesters.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cAt around 5:30 in the afternoon, while riding his motorcycle&#8230; he was struck in the chest by a firearm,\u201d states a report from the Interdisciplinary Group of Independent Experts (GIEI).<\/p>\n\n<p>In denouncing his killing, the family said he left to try to stop the attack on the massive march, because he knew there were many mothers and children there.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Aura Bland\u00f3n, mother of Dodanim Castilblanco Bland\u00f3n<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.confidencial.digital\/nacion\/las-19-madres-que-perdieron-sus-hijos-en-la-masacre-del-30-de-mayo\/#m15\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.confidencial.digital\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Aura-Blandon-madre-de-Dodanim-Jared-Castilblanco-Blandon.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p>Her eyes reflect the pain that still lingers. Aura Bland\u00f3n Ortiz describes\u2014in a video published by the AMA Memory Museum\u2014the most \u201chorrible\u201d moment of her life as May 30, when she had to identify the body of her son, Dodanim Castilblanco Bland\u00f3n, who was shot in the chest while participating in the Mother\u2019s Day March in Estel\u00ed. <\/p>\n\n<p>Castilblanco Bland\u00f3n was 26 years old. According to the GIEI, he was \u201cshot in the chest with a firearm\u201d during an attack by \u201carmed shock groups.\u201d <\/p>\n\n<p>His family holds responsible \u201carmed individuals, former guerrilla fighters, members of the Sandinista Youth, and others who were heavily armed with powerful weapons and ambushed\u201d the demonstrators.<\/p>\n\n<p>They remember him as a devoted father to his two young children; passionate about taekwondo\u2014in which he won multiple Central American medals\u2014hardworking, and entrepreneurial.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Sara Amelia L\u00f3pez, mother of Cruz Obreg\u00f3n L\u00f3pez<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.confidencial.digital\/nacion\/las-19-madres-que-perdieron-sus-hijos-en-la-masacre-del-30-de-mayo\/#m16\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.confidencial.digital\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Sara-Amelia-Lopez-madre-de-Cruz-Alberto-Obregon-Lopez.jpg\" alt=\"Sara Amelia L&#xF3;pez, mother of Cruz Alberto Obreg&#xF3;n L&#xF3;pez\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p>A phone call brought the devastating news. Sara Amelia L\u00f3pez, mother of Cruz Alberto Obreg\u00f3n L\u00f3pez, was in Costa Rica when her daughter Emy called to tell her that he had been killed\u2014shot multiple times in the chest, neck, and back. <\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cI had been feeling deeply sad about everything happening in Nicaragua\u2026 never imagining that on May 30 (2018), I would receive such heartbreaking news\u2014that my youngest son (just 23 years old) had been taken from me like that,\u201d she said with sorrow.<\/p>\n\n<p>The GIEI states that \u201cparamilitary groups,\u201d allegedly called in by local authorities from the Estel\u00ed mayor\u2019s office, were the ones who \u201cattacked\u201d the \u201cdemonstrators participating in the Mother\u2019s Day March\u201d in that city.<\/p>\n\n<p>Sara Amelia says that since her son\u2019s killing, \u201cit\u2019s as if a part of me also went to the cemetery.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p>She describes \u201cCrucito\u201d\u2014as he was lovingly called\u2014as intelligent, studious, and hardworking. She recalls that he used to support the Sandinista Front, but changed after witnessing the repression and the killing of his friend and classmate, Orlando Francisco P\u00e9rez. \u201cOrlando\u2019s death hurt him deeply\u2026 and that\u2019s when he got more involved in the marches,\u201d she explains.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Candelaria D\u00edaz, mother of Carlos Manuel V\u00e1squez D\u00edaz<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.confidencial.digital\/nacion\/las-19-madres-que-perdieron-sus-hijos-en-la-masacre-del-30-de-mayo\/#m19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.confidencial.digital\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Candelaria-Diaz-madre-de-Carlos-Manuel-Diaz-Vasquez.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p>In the final hours before her son\u2019s death, Candelaria D\u00edaz got to hear his voice one last time. In a video published by the AMA Memory Museum, she recalls how her son, Carlos Manuel V\u00e1squez D\u00edaz, told her he was on his way to Monimb\u00f3, Masaya, to visit her on May 30, 2018, for Mother\u2019s Day. But a bullet to the chest kept him from making it.  <\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cHe called me early and said: \u2018Mom, happy Mother\u2019s Day\u2026 I love you so much\u2026 I\u2019ll be there tonight.\u2019 Later that night, he called again and said he was on his way home, but 10:30 p.m. came and he still hadn\u2019t arrived,\u201d she recounts.<\/p>\n\n<p>She remembers that when she heard her son had been shot, she rushed to look for him at \u201cLa Placita\u201d in Monimb\u00f3, where people told her that demonstrators had taken him to an improvised medical post. But when she got there, the Red Cross was already transferring him to Humberto Alvarado Hospital, where he was declared dead at 12:15 a.m. <\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cI never imagined the tragedy I was about to face\u2026 I thought maybe he\u2019d been shot in the leg, or the arm\u2026 but I was only at the hospital for five minutes when a doctor came out and said there was nothing they could do\u2014that he was already gone,\u201d the mother mourns.<\/p>\n\n<p>After the death of 28-year-old Carlos Manuel, Candelaria learned that her son had stayed behind to support the community\u2019s resistance on his way to visit her. \u201cHe saw the young people who were out there fighting, and he stayed with them,\u201d she says. She never imagined he wouldn\u2019t make it to see his mom.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Mar\u00eda Elena Zepeda, mother of Juan Zepeda Ortiz<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.confidencial.digital\/nacion\/las-19-madres-que-perdieron-sus-hijos-en-la-masacre-del-30-de-mayo\/#m10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.confidencial.digital\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Maria-Elena-Zepeda-madre-de-Juan-Alejandro-Zepeda-Ortiz.jpg\" alt=\"Mar&#xED;a Elena Zepeda mother of Juan Alejandro Zepeda Ortiz\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p>Juan Alejandro Zepeda Ortiz, 18 years old, dreamed of becoming a doctor. He was killed in Chinandega on May 30, 2018. \u201cHe loved studying, he was a good student, but they stole his dream when they killed him,\u201d mourns his mother, Mar\u00eda Elena Zepeda.  <\/p>\n\n<p>She describes him as a cheerful young man who got good grades and was nicknamed \u201cEl Gast\u00f3n\u201d by his friends. She recalls he enjoyed playing baseball and was in his final year of high school at the Chinandega Polytechnic School.  <\/p>\n\n<p>She realized her son was \u201cinvolved in something\u201d (referring to the 2018 protests) when she noticed him singing protest songs. <\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cI heard him singing songs from the marches, and I saw how he started getting involved (\u2026) he didn\u2019t say anything because he knew, like any other mother, I would be scared,\u201d she explains in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/watch\/?v=4391691374179962\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">video from the AMA and No Olvida de las Madres de Abril Museum.<\/a><\/p>\n\n<p>On May 23, he joined the marches organized in Chinandega and soon began facing police harassment, with officers following him on motorbikes and patrol cars\u2014even to his home. But that didn\u2019t stop him. \u201cHe wanted a free country,\u201d Mar\u00eda Elena says firmly.   <\/p>\n\n<p>On May 30, he left home around 7:30 a.m. to join the protest march. In Chinandega, as in other departments of the country, the march was attacked by the National Police and pro-government shock groups. He was shot in the head. He died at 3:30 a.m. on May 31 in the local hospital.    <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Nidia Hernandez, sister of Rudy Antonio Hernandez<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.confidencial.digital\/nacion\/las-19-madres-que-perdieron-sus-hijos-en-la-masacre-del-30-de-mayo\/#m11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.confidencial.digital\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Lucia-Almendarez-hermana-de-Ruddy-Antonio-Hernandez-Almendarez.jpg\" alt=\"Nidia Hern&#xE1;ndez Almend&#xE1;rez, sister of Rudy Antonio Hern&#xE1;ndez Almend&#xE1;rez\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p>Rudy Antonio Hern\u00e1ndez Almend\u00e1rez did not agree with the brutal repression carried out by Daniel Ortega\u2019s government against the protests that began in April 2018. Since then, he had been carrying a Nicaraguan flag on the tricycle he used to make a living transporting goods. That\u2019s how his sister, Nidia Hern\u00e1ndez Almend\u00e1rez, remembers him.  <\/p>\n\n<p>On May 30, at 11:40 p.m., Rudy was admitted to Hospital Espa\u00f1a in Chinandega, already deceased, according to the report from the Interdisciplinary Group of Independent Experts (GIEI). In the list of deceased individuals submitted by the Nicaraguan state to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), it states that his injuries were caused by \u201cmultiple shrapnel wounds to the chest.\u201d However, a report published by <em>La Prensa <\/em>said his body showed \u201cshotgun pellets in the left shoulder and chest.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n<p>In a video recorded by the pro-government Channel 8, Rudy\u2019s mother, Luc\u00eda Margarita Almend\u00e1rez, says her son was wounded after approaching the site of the clashes by chance. In her testimony, she claims his murder wasn\u2019t Daniel Ortega\u2019s fault, though she also doesn\u2019t blame the \u201ccriminal groups\u201d that the police alleged were responsible. <\/p>\n\n<p>His sister recalls that the protest was repressed by police and by members of the Sandinista Youth (JS), who had barricaded themselves inside Chinandega\u2019s City Hall \u201cbecause the young protesters had pushed them back with stones.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cThis was a massacre carried out by the government against unarmed youth, who only had stones and slingshots. They were shooting to kill, because all the victims had precise gunshot wounds,\u201d denounced Nidia Hern\u00e1ndez.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Vilma Reyes Somoza, mother of Kevin Coffin Reyes<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.confidencial.digital\/nacion\/las-19-madres-que-perdieron-sus-hijos-en-la-masacre-del-30-de-mayo\/#m07\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.confidencial.digital\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Vilma-Reyes-Somoza-madre-de-Kevin-Antonio-Coffin.jpg\" alt=\"Vilma Reyes Somoza, mother of Kevin Antonio Coffin Reyes\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p>On December 16, 2017, Kevin Antonio Coffin Reyes gave his mother, Vilma Reyes Somoza, one of the greatest joys of her life: he won the gold medal in sambo in the 90-kilogram category at the XI Central American Games Managua 2017.<\/p>\n\n<p>Less than a year later, on May 30, 2018, he was killed. His family claims that \u201che was sprayed with bullets from a pickup truck\u201d while on his way to attend a government event. <\/p>\n\n<p>Vilma told the pro-government Channel 4 that her son dreamed of achieving success in his sport. \u201cHalf of my life is gone. He was everything,\u201d his mother recalled. <\/p>\n\n<p>Kevin was a member of the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) and had been working at the Ciudad Sandino City Hall for just over a month. The GIEI report states that at 5:30 p.m., \u201che was admitted dead to the Military Hospital School \u2018Dr. Alejandro D\u00e1vila Bola\u00f1os,\u2019 from a gunshot wound to the chest.\u201d <\/p>\n\n<p>In July 2019, the municipal authorities of Ciudad Sandino inaugurated a sports complex named after him. At <a href=\"https:\/\/www.el19digital.com\/articulos\/ver\/titulo:92228-inauguran-complejo-deportivo-kevin-coffin-reyes-en-ciudad-sandino\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">the event<\/a>, his mother expressed her gratitude for the tribute.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>Margarita Diaz, mother of Heriberto Perez Diaz<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.confidencial.digital\/nacion\/las-19-madres-que-perdieron-sus-hijos-en-la-masacre-del-30-de-mayo\/#m08\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.confidencial.digital\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Margarita-Diaz-Aguirre-madre-de-Heriberto-Maudiel-Perez-Diaz.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p>Three days before Heriberto Maudiel P\u00e9rez D\u00edaz was killed, on May 30, 2018, his mother, Margarita D\u00edaz Aguirre, had a dream that he would die a horrific death.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cI dreamed three days ago that he was covered in blood. I don\u2019t ask for anything because justice will come from above,\u201d she told the pro-government outlet El 19 Digital, which reported that she blamed university students for her son&#8217;s death.<\/p>\n\n<p>A National Police press release stated that he died following an attack allegedly carried out by a \u201cgroup of criminals\u201d against \u201cpeople participating in the Cantata in honor of Nicaraguan Mothers,\u201d organized by the government. However, the GIEI report notes that this version has been widely questioned. The group requested further information but never received a response. \u201cIn this case, the lack of information and scarcity of alternative sources have made it difficult to determine the exact circumstances of his death,\u201d the report stated.   <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Mirna R\u00edos, grandmother of Dariel Steven Guti\u00e9rrez R\u00edos<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.confidencial.digital\/nacion\/las-19-madres-que-perdieron-sus-hijos-en-la-masacre-del-30-de-mayo\/#m13\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.confidencial.digital\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/ABUELA-DE-DARIEL.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p>Dariel Steven Guti\u00e9rrez R\u00edos\u2019s family endured 60 days of anguish and pain. The 20-year-old was shot in the head on May 30, 2018, and died on July 31 that same year. <\/p>\n\n<p>His mother, an unidentified Sandinista militant, blamed \u201cthe terrorist gang of La Trinidad\u201d through the pro-government <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/tF0fEB26ak4?t=123\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Channel 4<\/a>. The voice that delivered every statement about his death was that of his sister, Thelma Luc\u00eda L\u00f3pez Toru\u00f1o, who adamantly denied \u2014 in pro-government media \u2014 that her relative had been participating in the anti-regime protests in Estel\u00ed. <\/p>\n\n<p>The GIEI report states that Mauricio Ram\u00f3n, 42 years old, \u201cwas shot with a firearm\u201d and was \u201ctreated\u201d at the San Juan de Dios Hospital in Estel\u00ed. However, he died during surgery at 10:30 p.m. <\/p>\n\n<p>According to experts, a \u201ccaravan of pro-government sympathizers\u201d had attempted to dismantle the roadblock set up in La Trinidad, Estel\u00ed, earlier that morning, but some of them failed to make it through to Managua and instead \u201cheaded toward the city of Estel\u00ed, where they were joined by paramilitaries who had allegedly been summoned by the city\u2019s mayor.\u201d Later, there was a \u201chunt\u201d for young people in La Trinidad, and in the afternoon, the participants of the \u201cMothers\u2019 March\u201d were \u201cattacked by those groups.\u201d <\/p>\n\n<p>Mauricio Ram\u00f3n was buried in the municipal cemetery. In the pro-government report, Thelma said that \u201cthe whole family and friends still can\u2019t come to terms with the crime.\u201d She blamed the killing on \u201cvandals\u201d who attacked him when \u201che was returning from selling products, accompanied by the driver of a pickup truck, who was also wounded by gunfire.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n<p>GIEI experts lamented that in Mauricio Ram\u00f3n\u2019s case, \u201cthe lack of information and the scarcity of alternative sources have made it difficult to determine the exact circumstances of his death.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Marvin Jos\u00e9 Mel\u00e9ndez N\u00fa\u00f1ez, killed in Chinandega<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.confidencial.digital\/nacion\/las-19-madres-que-perdieron-sus-hijos-en-la-masacre-del-30-de-mayo\/#m09\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.confidencial.digital\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/madre-de-Marvin-Jose-Melendez.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p>Although several pro-government outlets reported widely on the killing of Marvin Jos\u00e9 Mel\u00e9ndez N\u00fa\u00f1ez \u2014 a 49-year-old FSLN militant who worked in the Risk Management Unit of the El Viejo City Hall in Chinandega \u2014 they never reported the name of his mother, though they did publish a photo of her and other family members beside his burial vault in a cemetery.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cWe, his siblings, his children, are in pain (\u2026) my mother is left with a deep sorrow. We ask that these conflicts stop, because there have already been too many deaths,\u201d one of his sisters told pro-government Channel 13, which also did not identify her by name.<\/p>\n\n<p>His family has participated in FSLN-organized events, but the media has not broadcast their statements. They highlighted that he carried out important humanitarian work for 18 years during hurricanes, droughts, floods, emergency drills, rescue missions for missing persons near the Cosig\u00fcina Volcano, and in fighting forest fires. <\/p>\n\n<p>A press release from the National Police stated that Marvin died in front of the Chinandega City Hall when a \u201cgroup of criminals\u201d attacked the building and assaulted the people guarding it.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Felipe Salcedo, father of Darwin Salcedo V\u00edlchez<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.confidencial.digital\/nacion\/las-19-madres-que-perdieron-sus-hijos-en-la-masacre-del-30-de-mayo\/#m12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.confidencial.digital\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Darwin-Salgado-Vilchez.jpg\" alt=\"Darwin Salcedo Vilchez\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p>The family of Darwin Salcedo V\u00edlchez, originally from San Juan del R\u00edo Coco, gave practically no statements to the media. The only one who spoke was his father Felipe Salcedo, apparently a Sandinista, who told the official newspaper <a href=\"https:\/\/www.el19digital.com\/articulos\/ver\/titulo:77675-muere-joven-de-san-juan-de-rio-coco-impactado-de-bala-el-30-de-mayo-en-esteli\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">El 19 Digital<\/a> that the 18 year old was not a student and worked in a lathe workshop in Estel\u00ed. He had left the workshop on the night of May 30 heading home when he was struck by a bullet.  <\/p>\n\n<p>The propaganda outlet reported that his father said the young man died on June 1 at the San Juan de Dios hospital in Estel\u00ed, after he was \u201caccidentally shot in the head on May 30 during the clashes that took place in that city.\u201d <\/p>\n\n<p>The report published by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.laprensa.com.ni\/2018\/06\/02\/nacionales\/2429159-joven-que-recibio-disparo-en-su-cabeza-muere-tras-permanecer-en-estado-critico-en-esteli\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">newspaper <em>La Prensa<\/em><\/a> states that the direct cause of his death was due to a \u201cbrainstem dysfunction caused by a wound inflicted by a .22 caliber rifle bullet that penetrated his skull.\u201d <\/p>\n\n<p>GIEI experts said they requested a meeting with Darwin\u2019s family and more information from the State about this and other deaths, but \u201cthey never received a response.\u201d <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jairo Antonio Osorio Raudales, killed in Jalapa<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.confidencial.digital\/nacion\/las-19-madres-que-perdieron-sus-hijos-en-la-masacre-del-30-de-mayo\/#m14\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.confidencial.digital\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/madre-de-Jairo-Antonio-Osorio-Raudales.jpg\" alt=\"Jairo Antonio Osorio Raudales\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p>Jairo Antonio Osorio Raudales was 39 years old. Originally from Teocacinte, Jalapa. He worked as a farmer and was the father of a ten-year-old child. His story and the names of his family members are unknown.    <\/p>\n\n<p>A year after his assassination, his mother and family participated in an event organized by the FSLN, according to photos from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/lassegoviasennoticias\/posts\/2416151838447187\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Las Segovias en Noticias<\/a> portal, but no statements from them have been recorded. <\/p>\n\n<p>On May 30, 2018, according to the GIEI report, Jairo was killed during clashes between people stationed at the roadblock set up on the Panamericana Norte highway at kilometer 124 (Municipality of La Trinidad \u2013 Estel\u00ed) and police officers and members of a caravan of government party supporters who tried to evict them in order to pass through that area to Managua to attend a government event scheduled in the capital. <\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cJairo Antonio, who was part of the caravan, was shot in the thorax. At approximately 1:00 in the afternoon he arrived at the San Juan de Dios Hospital (Estel\u00ed), already dead\u201d, according to the GIEI report.<\/p>\n\n<p>The National Police reported in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.policia.gob.ni\/?p=19354\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">press release<\/a> that 16 policemen and 31 people were injured that day and blamed \u201chooded subjects\u201d.<\/p>\n\n<p>The GIEI report mentions there is reason to believe that the shots that hit the victim came from the people stationed at the roadblock. However, they were unable to arrange a meeting with Jairo Antonio\u2019s family, as with other victims\u2019 families. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Jos\u00e9 Manuel Quintero, murdered in Estel\u00ed<\/strong><\/h2>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.confidencial.digital\/nacion\/las-19-madres-que-perdieron-sus-hijos-en-la-masacre-del-30-de-mayo\/#m18\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.confidencial.digital\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Lazo2.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>The story of how Jos\u00e9 Manuel Quintero died has yet to be told. The names of his mother or any relatives are unknown. Neither is there information on the number of bullets that caused his death, which part of his body was hit, whether he was another protester against the regime, or if his family is still demanding justice.  <\/p>\n\n<p>According to the GIEI, he was 28 years old, from Estel\u00ed, and was admitted to the local hospital already deceased. \u201cThe Commission for Truth, Justice and Reparation (created by the National Assembly with a Sandinista majority) links his death to the context of social protest, placing it at the La Trinidad roadblock, without further details,\u201d the GIEI report notes. <\/p>\n\n<p>The group documented \u201ctwo conflicts\u201d on May 30, 2018, in the Estel\u00ed department where \u201cfirearms and violence were used.\u201d One at the roadblock set up on the Panamericana Norte route, exactly at kilometer 124 in the municipality of La Trinidad, and the other during the Mothers\u2019 March held in the city of Estel\u00ed.
