Mexican journalist Alma Guillermoprieto covered the Sandinista revolution in Nicaragua and the subsequent civil war in El Salvador, being one of the few reporters who narrated the massacre of hundreds of villagers in El Mozote. During that time, she met the current Nicaraguan \u201cduumvirate\u201d Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo, and believes that there was \u201csome process of mental degeneration\u201d behind their authoritarian drift. <\/p>\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s really such a deranged process that I can\u2019t frame it in political terms. It\u2019s more like what happened with the Ceau\u0219escus in Romania. I think, obviously, they\u2019re very skillful and cunning people, but they\u2019ve also gone through some sort of mental deterioration\u2014this duumvirate of Daniel and Rosario\u2014because what they\u2019re doing is not within the bounds of mental normalcy,\u201d the Mexican journalist explains in a phone interview with EFE.<\/p>\n\n

Alma Guillermoprieto (1949) traveled to Guatemala to participate in the Central America Cuenta Festival<\/a>, a region where she began her journalistic career, beginning precisely in Nicaragua, where she wanted to witness the Sandinista revolution that had taken up arms against the Somoza dictatorship, overthrowing it in 1979.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cI found myself, like many others, swept up in the euphoria of what we sensed would be a triumphant revolution. And to this day, I don\u2019t know why we believed that, what exactly convinced us (\u2026) After the painful blow of the coup in Chile, Nicaragua felt like a glass of water to someone dying of thirst. I wanted to see what that was like\u2014and that\u2019s how I got my start as a reporter,\u201d she recalls, her voice soft and measured.<\/p>\n\n

Until then, Guillermoprieto had no experience as a journalist, nor much interest in it, dreaming instead of being a dancer. \u201cBut I had a friend who always insisted I should be a journalist,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd when the opportunity came, he had a publication called Latin American Newsletters. I called him and said, \u2018Alright, I\u2019m ready now\u2019 (\u2026) The next day he recommended me to The Guardian, and I never got off that train.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

In Nicaragua, she interviewed many of the guerrilla leaders who helped the Sandinista Front topple the Somoza regime. She recalls how they gathered at the Intercontinental Hotel in Managua, \u201cthe only place at the time with reliable electricity and running water.\u201d <\/p>\n\n

She didn\u2019t interview Rosario Murillo, but she did speak with her to coordinate interviews with her partner, Daniel Ortega.<\/p>\n\n

– And how do you remember her?<\/p>\n\n

\u201cShe was a woman\u2026 very beautiful and, how can I put it? Very tough. And\u2026 she seemed to expect the worst from everyone. That was the impression she gave me,\u201d Guillermoprieto recalls.<\/p>\n\n

She can\u2019t understand how that utopian revolution could morph, over time, into an authoritarian regime where Ortega and Murillo\u2014now essentially co-presidents of Nicaragua\u2014have forced so many former comrades into exile, like Cervantes Prize\u2013winner Sergio Ram\u00edrez, who now heads the Central America Cuenta festival. Others have been jailed, expelled, or stripped of their nationality\u2014journalists and opposition members alike.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s very strange. I would really like to sit down with Rosario and ask her, \u2018What happened to you?\u2019\u201d says Guillermoprieto.<\/p>\n\n

She says she has \u201cof course\u201d requested \u201cthat interview, that conversation\u2014but obviously, no.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

\u201cI would love it,\u201d she continues. \u201cI\u2019d love to ask her how she\u2019s lived all these years, because she must\u2019ve lived in a very dark place to have such bizarre paranoias,\u201d the journalist adds.<\/p>\n\n

El Salvador, the massacre and Bukele<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n

Guillermoprieto spent four years in Central America as a reporter, \u201ca long, long time\u201d, between Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, a bit of Panama, until she was hired by the Washington Post and moved to the U.S. capital.<\/p>\n\n

In El Salvador, she covered the 1980s civil war, including the December 1981 El Mozote massacre, where soldiers killed nearly 1,000 peasants. Hard to access, Guillermoprieto was the second reporter to arrive at the massacre site, after her New York Times colleague Ray Bonner. <\/p>\n\n

She avoids reminiscing about that coverage: \u201cI don’t talk about it much, but my articles and those of my colleague Ray Bonner are there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

At the time, Guillermoprieto wrote: “The first overwhelming impression was the sweet and nauseating smell of the decomposing bodies. We were in Mozote.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

Bonner and Guillermoprieto\u2019s reports provoked a furious response from the Reagan administration, which supported the Salvadoran army and denied what had happened.<\/p>\n\n

Otto Reich, a \u201cCuban exile\u2014or self-exile\u201d\u2014working for the U.S. State Department, wrote letters to The Washington Post saying she \u201cshould be fired.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

\u201cIt was an unpleasant time,\u201d she recalls.<\/p>\n\n

Now, after the civil war and the gang violence that followed, El Salvador has entered a new era under President Nayib Bukele, whose \u201cway of governing is clearly authoritarian, and the infamous prison is a display of blatant, brutal human rights violations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

\u201cBut it\u2019s all part of a deliberate performance by Bukele to achieve his goal, which is to instill terror,\u201d she says, lamenting that under the Salvadoran regime, \u201cthey arrest and arrest and keep arresting\u2014there is no legal process that ensures prisoners have the right to a defense.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

In neighboring Guatemala\u2014once the region\u2019s bright spot after the election of President Bernardo Ar\u00e9valo de Le\u00f3n\u2014the situation remains troubled due to attacks from Attorney General Consuelo Porras, including against journalists.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cWhat always strikes me,\u201d she says, \u201cis how much fear a sad little reporter can provoke in someone with all the power in the world. I don\u2019t get it. I don\u2019t understand Bukele in that regard, and I don\u2019t understand Consuelo Porras and her constant attacks on a journalist, a good man like Jos\u00e9 Rub\u00e9n Zamora.
